DME has hired Coach Steven Kenner to serve as head coach for Prep Team White during the 2019 – 2020 season. Coach Steven has a great compassion for teaching the game and his history shows it.

While serving as the Head Women’s Basketball coach at Southeastern Illinois College in 2018-2019 his team finished the season 22-10 with a home record of 13-1 and a second-place finish within the conference. He also aided in the development of 2018-19 NJCAA All American Shamari Tyson.

During his time there, he coached six players that went on to NCAA Division I and II schools. He was also instrumental in the recruitment of Alex Pantelic, from Belgrade, Serbia, during the final games of the Men’s Basketball season.

As a former member of the University of Georgia (UGA) Men’s Basketball program, Kenner has found success on several levels. He has spent time coaching collegiately for NCAA Division II and III, and NJCAA Division I teams for almost 16 years. While at UGA, he served as the Head Manager, assisting the coaching staff with on-court player development, video scouting report, bench duties, and on-campus recruitment of student-athletes. It was during that time that he heard his calling to be a coach.

“Basketball is a great game meant for much fun, enjoyment, and a tool to inform us of our possibilities. I like to relate everything we do in basketball to life – how we handle adversity, criticism, and success. As a basketball coach, I have a vested interest in helping our student-athletes to fulfill their potential in the classroom, in the community, and on the court. My primary role, as I perceive it, is to assist student-athletes not only to achieve but exceed their educational goals and aspirations…to encourage, nurture, and develop sportsmanlike conduct with an emphasis on academic accomplishments. In conjunction, we are providing opportunities for those driven to compete at a higher level to enhance and advance their basketball career,” Coach Steve closed with when giving some insight words on his purpose with coaching.

NEW YORK, June 17 (Xinhua) — Sports skill training and cultural exchange opportunities offered by DME Sports Academy for talented students and young individuals from around the world have advanced people-to-people connection between China and the United States.

“We plan to do a great job to deliver meaningful education for kids. They get a chance to not just learn about Americans, but about kids from all over the world,” Mike Panaggio, co-founder and owner of DME Sports Academy (DMESA), told Xinhua in a recent interview at Daytona Beach, the east coastal county of Florida.

Established three years ago, DMESA offers top-level athletic development training and life skills mentoring to both U.S. domestic and overseas young talent. Panaggio expects some 60 to 75 kids joining in DMESA next year, including about one tenth from China.

One of his favorite exchange students was a 13-year-old Chinese boy, Chris Gao, who had lived with Panaggio and his Chinese wife, Jennifer, in their home. “He’s a straight A student, we were very proud of him. He’s like our son,” Panaggio recalled.

Panaggio inherited the passion for sports, basketball in particular, from his father, and combined his business talent with his love for what sports do for kids to pay back the community of Daytona Beach.

“Basketball in sports is a privilege for kids to play. Our job is to get them to college. And if they want to continue in the United States with additional degrees, we’re all for that and we promote them,” he said.

Panaggio believes that for kids from around the world to the academy, education here is not only about schoolwork and learning in the books. It’s about “learning how to speak the English language” and about “learning about other people,” he noted. “It’s just a great cultural exchange.”

Being a sharp businessman, he went to China in late 1980s, realizing the potential of Chinese market. “I love China and I think that anyone I’ve met in China has always been great. I like the people,” he said emotionally.

Despite the ongoing tensions between the United States and China in trade and some other sectors, Panaggio was “quite optimistic” about the prospects of the two countries” relationship. “At least we’re hoping there isn’t gonna be a problem. Because I think of Chinese students no different from that we think of American students. People are people,” he added.

Spring Prep closed out the season and finished up tournament play in Atlanta, Georgia for an All – American JUCO Showcase. Some of the highlight moments of Spring Prep included Tony Sun from China who attended 2019 Final Four to represent China and DME in the Final Four showcase activity games. DME HS Girls suited up this past weekend for the SIAA Championship against PottersHouse.
Before the game, the girls attended the SIAA Banquet and 2020 Hilani Cantone and Mary McMillan were named 2nd Team All SIAA. 2019 Ahna Burney and 2021 Isys Grady were named 1st Team All SIAA. Coach Michael Panaggio was also named SIAA Coach Of The Year for the second year in a row.

DME HS Girls suited up and played a tough match against PottersHouse. The girls won the SIAA Championship 76 – 53 over Potter’s House with Ahna Burney season high of 31 points. Isys Grady, Mary McMillan, and Hilani Cantone were all were in double figures as well.

Ahna Burney was named SIAA Tournament MVP. DME HS girls finished the 2018-2019 Season 28-11. HS Girls has 4 seniors leaving but have 6 talented players returning.

DME hosted the 2nd Mauro Panaggio Invitational Tournament this past weekend. Four NCAA Division 3 colleges competed for year bragging rights in the DME Field House.

 The first series of games started on Sunday at noon with The College at Brockport and Gallaudet University. Brockport dominated with a win 100 – 63.

Next game was Nazareth and Washington & Lee University. Washington took the win 94 – 68. You can watch the game here.

Monday started with the Consolation game with Nazareth and Gallaudet University. With great efforts from both teams, Nazareth took the win 73- 56. You can watch here.
The Championship Game followed up next with Washington & Lee and Brockport. Washington Lee took home the trophy by closing out a win with a nine-point lead 75 – 66. You can watch here.

All-Tournament players were named at the end and rewarded with a plaque. All-Tourney Players were Steve Valencia-Biskupiak – Gallaudet, Justin Summers – Brockport, Tyler Stenglein – Nazareth, and Devin Kearns – Washington & Lee. Roy McMillan from Washington & Lee took home Tournament MVP! You can check out the photos on our Facebook page here.

After losing UNC commit Alexis Duckett for the season, DME Girl’s High School Team has not skipped a beat. DME Girl’s team is currently 8-0 and no team has stayed within 20 points. The team is very talented and has great depth. The team has 5 girls averaging double figures, led by Sophomore I’sis Grady who is leading the team in points, rebounds, and steals with 14 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 2.6 steals a game.

Senior Guard Ahna Burney has been scoring 13 points per game and has helped make up for Duckett’s absence. FAMU commit Hilani Cantone is also off to a strong start averaging 12 points a game in her junior year. Three other girls are averaging 9 points, 8 points, and 7 points respectively.

Coach Michael Panaggio says this is the best team he has coached thus far regardless AAU or High School. DME recently had a showdown with 3x Defending State Champs Fort Myers who has 2021 star, Chaniya Clark. DME made a statement with a 29 point victory. The schedule gets tougher as they go deeper into December and the new year.

Three of the next four games DME plays before Christmas are Timber Creek High School out of Orlando, followed up by a huge home game December 15th against National Top 5 Ranked Hamilton Heights, and another matchup against talented Montverde Academy.

DME Blue suited up against the #10 Post Grad Team in the county yesterday night.
DME Blue traveled to Monteverde Academy to play for the first time in their season.

Blue came out slow, falling behind Montverde in the first few minutes. Fighting their way back into the game, DME Blue finished the first half only down three points.

Beginning of the seconds half, Blue started off slow trailing 11 points. Competing back and forth, Blue was down 3 points with 20 seconds left to go in the game. Jermaine Marshall hit a game-changing three-pointer with nine seconds left in the game. Jermaine finished with 24 points. With the game tied, Blue made a great stop defensively which led the game into overtime.

Blue came out strong in the beginning of overtime with a couple three-pointers from Jacob Traci and Jeremy Golson. Traci finished with 14 points, 9 assists, and 5 steals. Jeremy Golson added 15 points and Antonine Kemking had 15 rebounds along with 8 points.

Blue took the lead in the last few minutes of overtime with some good defensive stops to win the game, closing out the win 85-79.

“It was a great team effort, everyone contributed to the win. Our bench gave us great quality minutes. Proud of our guys and it feels good to see the guys fight back into the game and get the win as a team,” Coach Wesam included after the game.

DME Blue next game will be Tuesday, November 13th at the College of Central Florida at 7:30 pm in Ocala, Florida.
